Increasingly libraries across the country are seeing a need to provide social services to the populations they serve. Many libraries are starting to work more closely with social service agencies in their communities and some libraries have hired social workers as part of their staff. The panel will provide insights from three area libraries and their experiences in extending their reach to address the social service needs in their community. After the presentations there will be time to ask questions.

Community engagement is a buzz term right now in the library world for good reason. Now more than ever, libraries must look outside library walls to work with the community in new ways. Join the RLA-CE Committee for a panel discussion about current ideas in community engagement and outreach.

Thanks to everyone who attended our May 22 program Be a Librarian Problem Solver led by Skokie Public Library’s Steven Jablonski and Jon Yates, Problem Solver for the Chicago Tribune. We learned a great deal about what to do and where to go when our patrons have difficulties with companies, utilities, agencies, and more.

Amy Alessio recap

On March 20, Amy Alessio did a fascinating program on cookbooks, crafting books and related genres – which ones we should purchase and what to weed from our collections. Her presentation was full of clever ideas for programs – Knit a Cupcake (for teens), displays – combine cookbooks with fiction titles and lots more.
