CE Around the State – March 2014

March blew in like a lion. A cold, bitter, grumpy lion whose icy grip distracted me from getting to this month’s continuing ed offerings until almost mid-month–apologies loyal followers! However, there’s still a few highlights left in ol’ March worth checking out if you aren’t too tired out from PLA!

If you’re not really much of a tech services person but always wanted to be, you may be interested in the KAPCO Book Repair Workshop at Quincy Public Library on Thursday, March 20, 2014  from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM. This three-hour comprehensive workshop is designed to demonstrate quick and easy techniques for extending shelf life on general circulating materials. Prevention is the key, but specific, common repairs such as re-inserting loose pages, broken spines, torn header caps, ripped and torn pages, will be addressed. Each participant is asked to bring one or two paperback books, preferably new or new-like, to demonstrate covering techniques; a hardbound book with a book jacket to demonstrate application of book jacket covers; a stapled book or magazine; one hardbound book that needs repair and a “naked” hardbound book (a hardbound book that does NOT have a book jacket cover). Each participant will be provided with a free sample packet of materials. There will also be a drawing after the workshop for a Deluxe Paperback Protection Kit from KAPCO retail value of $105. (To register,  please click the register link and click on the calendar link. Select “community” and click on “Library Book Repair Workshop” to register for the workshop.) REGISTER FREE

If your library serves patrons from any immigrant populations, you might be interested in How to Create a “Citizenship Corner” and Inform Immigrants about Available Health Resources, a meeting happening at Indian Prairie PLD on Tuesday, July 23 from 3:15-5:15 p.m. Rachel Brooks, who is an Americorps Fellow working with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights and who is assigned to World Relief DuPage, is working to implement a “citizenship corner” in each library. This approach is based on a USCIS initiative from California which has recently been implemented with the City of Chicago libraries. The “citizenship corner” would include a four-hour training for one or more people on staff at each library to be able to better help immigrants going through the citizenship process. Rachel will explain the idea of the citizenship corner and how it has been used at other libraries. She will be available to answer questions. For those libraries interested in participating, the training sessions will be in September. Please email Joe Popowitch at joep@ippl.info if you can attend. FREE
