CE Around the State – January 2014

Holidays are over and the winds are blustering–welcome back to another selection of continuing education highlights from around the state.

 

It may seem a little early to start thinking about your summer reading program, but not necessarily–come out to the Performer Showcase/Summer Reading Kickoff Tuesday, January 7, 2014 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM at the Rock Falls Public Library District. The Performer Showcase is an opportunity for those librarians and staff who hire performers for summer reading or other library/community programs to see a bit of their performance and meet them in person. 12 performers will showcase their talents and will be available for bookings after the showcase. Please bring copies of a summer reading craft or activity to share with the group, sponsored by RAILS. Please call the Rock Falls Library at 815-626-3958 or email rfdistrict@yahoo.com to register. If you are interested in Teen Services, you might want to check out the Young Adult Librarians Discussion Group-YALD Meeting on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM at Niles Public Library DistrictThe YALD Group (Young Adult Librarians Discussion Group) is a former NSLS networking group, but is open to anyone interested in Teen Services. We usually meet every other month during the school year at a local library. Meetings are pretty informal and anyone can bring up any topic at any meeting. FREE

WebJunction has a couple of great offerings this month, kicking off with Flexible Spaces – Flexible Futures on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM. As libraries continue to evolve as community spaces and information hubs, there is an opportunity to explore how patrons use library space and to create spaces that are flexible and adaptable to changing needs. Presenter Dri Ralph has helped lead the King County Library System (WA) through an extensive bond project which has included the renovation and/or building of 30 libraries. She will share highlights of their design choices, ideas for flexible use of space, and tips for engaging the community in the planning and design process. The webinar will also explore options for libraries with limited budgets. You’ll learn about opportunities to help any library make innovative choices for engaging with patrons. Presented by: Kendra Morgan, OCLC Senior Program Manager, and Dri Ralph, Facilities Design Coordinator, King County Library System. Health literacy is the topic of another WebJunction webinar this month, Health Happens in Libraries: Health Information Resources for Library Staff on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM. Join this WebJunction webinar to learn more about the health information resources available through the National Library of Medicine and the NN/LM. Representatives of the NN/LM Pacific Southwest Regional Medical Library will discuss their collaborative efforts with public libraries regarding the Affordable Care Act and other popular health information topics. They will be joined by a representative from Santa Ana Public Library, and together share strategies for strengthening your own library’s health information services, to improve the health literacy of your community. REGISTER FREE
