CE Around the State – October 2013

Back again for another roundup of great continuing education programs happening out in Libraryland, the end of October is looking great! If you have any energy left after ILA, that is…

First, however, I want to remind you about OUR next program happening NEXT month, The Three Faces of Apps: App Programming, App Advisory, App Discovery, is coming up on Thursday, November 7th, 9:30 a.m.- 12 p.m. in the Cardinal Room of the Arlington Heights Memorial Library! Join Amy Holcomb of the Northbrook Public Library, Heather Love Beverley of the Cook Memorial Public Library, and Anne Belden of the Ela Area Public Library for a discussion of apps in the library world. Boost your creativity and productivity using apps and introduce new resources to your patrons.

After the program, there will be an optional tour of the newly renovated Arlington Heights Memorial Library.

Now–on to October! If you are drained from all the excitement and fury that is the ILA Conference, you may only have energy for this interesting WebJunction offering, Libraries Go “Outside the Box” with Redbox, a webinar with the Outside the Box. Led by the local communities, with support from OCLC, and guidance by consultants from the Project for Public Spaces, the initiative explores “placemaking,” an approach that breathes life and community connection into public spaces. This webinar will showcase placemaking activities at the pilot libraries, as well as share best practices and perspectives on community engagement from program partners. Presented by Megan Knapp, Project Manager, OCLC, Elena Madison, Vice President, Project for Public Spaces, and Hallie Rich, Marketing and Communications Director, Cuyahoga County Public Library. Wednesday, October 23, 1 p.m. FREE REGISTER

Another program that looks like fun is the Adult Reading Round Table (AART) Unconference Tuesday, October 29 from 1-4 p.m. at Downers Grove PL. Look forward to a day of brainstorming and discussion at ARRT’s first unconference dedicated to readers’ advisory! When you register online for the unconference, share the ideas, topics and issues you want to talk about! Or pass along suggestions on Facebook (facebook.com/arrtreads) or on Twitter (#arrtreads). We’ll compile all your suggestions, and you’ll vote for your favorites at the unconference! The top picks will become the subjects for the day’s breakout sessions. Jason Smith, co-owner of The Book Table, will be our keynote speaker! Questions? Email Debra Wischmeyer at: dwischmeyer@dglibrary.org or Leah White at: leahwhite13@gmail.com. This event is sponsored by Reaching Across Illinois Library System. $5 REGISTER

That’s it for October–get some rest and we’ll see you in November!
